Major basque trade unions as well as CNT, CGT and 100 other social organisations have called for a general strike on September 26 in Southern Basque Country to protest against the sales tax hikes and spending cuts approved recently by the Spanish government.
Six new arrests in the town of Sabadell (Barcelona province) rise to 113 the number of people arrested in Catalunya for taking part in the March 29 strike. Pau Llonch, vocalist of the At Versaris group, is among the people arrested today. More than 100 people gathered outside the town’s police station as soon as the news came out. One of detainees was released a few hours later, and claimed police had confused him with another person, confirming the existence of police files of non-arrested people. By 7pm all the detainees have been released, after being charged with public disorder.
Four people were arrested this morning in Iruñea when cops attacked people waiting for the start of the “Encierro de la Villavesa” (runningof the bus, in Iruñea the buses are known as villavesas), an annual event held on the day after the end of the San Fermín festival. Cops prevented people from starting the symbolic march, and responded by throwing bottles and stones to the cops. Barricades were set up around the centre of the town, while police used rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. It is unknown how many people were injured, although no one is in serious condition.
A molotov cocktail was tossed at a bank office late last night (July 14) in Valencia. The office was burnt down, and no one has claimed responsibility yet for the attack.
